What Makes Us the Same – Senses and Accessibility in Art and Cultural Activities

Publication cover: A human brain made of plasticine on a colourful watercolour background.

Editors: Raisa Laukkanen ja Minna Lepistö

The purpose of the What Makes Us the Same – Senses and Accessibility in Art and Cultural Activities publication is to promote the work on accessibility by giving a voice to the people doing the work and with concrete examples from the field. This publication is not meant as a guidebook as such, but it can guide the reader into seeing the world and their place in it in a new way.

One perspective that is common to all the articles in this publication are the senses of human beings. How they work, what is their scope, and what are their limitations are crucial questions when evaluating the accessibility of art and cultural activities. The writers share their experiences as instructors and experts by experience. The publication is meant primarily for instructors and teachers working with people of different ages in art and cultural activities. But since accessibility, equality, and agency are issues penetrating our entire society, the articles contain food for thought and dialogue for all readers who work with people in all sorts of activities.

The exercises that accompany the articles are meant to give the time and space for all people to be equal, conscious beings. The exercises can be done alone or with one’s activity group. Some exercises can also be used as tools for teachers and instructors to develop and evaluate their own working methods.

The publication has been published as part of the international Erasmus+ project Education as a Constructor of Social and Cultural Sustainability for the 21st century / Sus21 (2020–2023)
