Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage through transformative learning within community based art – HEART (2022–2024)

Making intangible cultural heritage visible through community-based art education.

Citizens’ Forum coordinates Erasmus+ partnership project “Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage through transformative learning within community-based art (HEART)”. The theme of the project was to make intangible cultural heritage visible using the methods of community-based art education. The aim was to develop and test a new way of engaging with cultural heritage using communal art education methods, underpinned by the principles of transformative learning. The two-year project took place from 1.12.2022 to 30.11.2024.

During the project, each project partner modeled their own art education process. Under the guidance of an art educator, they studied a theme or phenomenon in which intangible cultural heritage lives in society but is in danger of disappearing if it is not made visible. In the processes, the theme was made visible through methods based on community-based art education. The processes were recorded and described verbally, after which the documented material was compiled into a common digital toolkit for instructors, and anyone interested in the topic to freely use in various contexts. During the project, the aim was also to find out how the principles of transformative learning can be utilised in processes and what kind of added value it can bring to them.

The primary target groups of the HEART project were teachers, trainers, and coordinators in different education sectors, as well as NGOs and associations. It was hoped that they will apply the toolkit produced in the project in their own processes and trainings of different groups in the field of culture and art, and volunteer coordinators.

In addition to the Citizens’ Forum, Asociatia Perseidele from Romania, Blue Beehive from Spain, Oideas Gael from Ireland and University of Eastern Finland from Finland are involved in the project.
